  • ⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ⅔ cup dark molasses (not blackstrap)
  • ¾ cup hot water
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Orange Icing (Optional):

  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
